Downwell Group awarded major Civils Enabling Works contract at the British Museum

Downwell Group has secured a significant multi‑year civils enabling works contract at the British Museum, one of London’s most prestigious Grade I listed landmarks. Awarded by Dalkia UK, the project strengthens Downwell’s growing reputation as a trusted partner for complex heritage, inner‑city, and infrastructure enabling works.

Delivering Specialist Civils Enabling Works in a Grade I Listed Environment

Working deep within the Museum’s extensive basement areas, Downwell Group will create new sub‑floor spaces to accommodate essential pipework for an upgraded heating system. The project demands a highly specialist approach, combining structural precision with rigorous heritage protection measures.

By deploying advanced planning and controlled methodologies, our teams will ensure the Museum’s historic fabric remains fully protected throughout the works — an essential requirement when operating within one of the world’s most recognisable cultural institutions.

Protecting Collections, Visitors and the Museum Environment

To safeguard both the visitor experience and the Museum’s priceless artefacts, noise and vibration levels will be tightly restricted and continuously monitored. These controls guarantee that the British Museum can operate without disruption, maintaining the safety and stability of its collections while enabling modern upgrades to the building’s infrastructure.

A Multi‑Disciplinary Downwell Team Delivering Technical Excellence

The project will be led by Contracts Manager Andy Moore and newly appointed Project Manager Reece Newson. Their teams will draw on expertise from across the Downwell Group, including:

This integrated approach ensures seamless project delivery across demolition, environmental management, scaffolding, fire prevention and complex civils operations – an approach that has become a defining part of The Downwell Difference.

Strengthening Our Position in Heritage and Inner‑City Enabling Works

Managing Director Andy McClafferty commented:

“This award is a fantastic milestone for Downwell Group and underlines our position as the go-to civils enabling works partner for complex, inner city and heritage projects.

Alongside projects at HS2 near Euston, a residential block on the Thames at Westminster, and a major new data centre in Docklands, the British Museum contract shows the level of trust our clients place in our people, our planning and our performance.”

Supporting the Future of One of London’s Most Iconic Museums

As the British Museum undertakes essential modernisation to support its long‑term sustainability, Downwell Group is proud to contribute specialist knowledge, precision planning and multi‑disciplinary expertise. This high‑profile contract further reinforces our position as a leading UK provider of civils enabling, heritage construction support, and complex inner‑city project delivery.
